The Student of Fire Initiative aims to shape the future of wildland fire training by blending science, personalized learning, and rigorous evaluation to build an adaptable and skilled lifelong fire learners.

Our Mission


The Student of Fire Initiative provides wildland fire practitioners of all kinds with high quality, evidence-based training and ongoing evaluation of learning outcome. We deliver the skills, mentorship and support systems that prepare resilient wildland fire professionals, setting the standard for high quality training programs.  

Our Priorities


  • Provide access to high quality training and workforce development opportunities for students, wildland fire professionals, and private landowners.
  • Assess training effectiveness, share outcomes broadly and apply lessons learned to ensure training brings real world impact.
  • Identify and coordinate actionable research priorities with agencies, practitioners, and communities to address growing need for wildland fire training.
  • Collaborate with agencies, cadres, practitioners and other stakeholders to coordinate training and evaluation for their specific group.

The Student of Fire Initiative is among the first in the nation dedicated to providing high quality training for wildland fire professionals. Our goal is to ensure that every practitioner has access to high quality training they need to succeed. Your support helps make this dream a reality.

  • Scholarships – Help cover the cost of required courses for those who have limited training funds.
  • Content Development – Support the creation, evaluation and delivery of high-quality trainings.
  • Research – Advance our commitment to understanding how people learn most effectively and applying that knowledge in strengthening the fire community.
